The title of actress Bonnie Franklin's most popular role has taken on an unintended significance. Franklin, he played the irascible, but loving mom Ann Romano on the popular TV sitcom 'One Day At a Time' has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The show followed the family of three as they tried to meet day-to-day struggles in their Indianapolis apartment. The family is befriended by the building's superintendent Schneider, who almost becomes a distaff father figure.
Franklin recently played parts on TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland," in a reunion of sorts with Bertinelli and the TV soap "The Young & The Restless." Her most recent TV role dated back to 2000 in an episode of "Touched By An Angel," according to IMDB.
Franklin's second husband, producer Marvin Minoff, died in 2009.
Franklin previously earned a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for her work in the 1970 Broadway musical "Applause." She was nominated for an Emmy in 1982 for her performance on "One Day at a Time."
The brief statement from her family, circulated by CBS, said was being treated for pancreatic cancer and was "continuing her normal schedule during this time."
"She and her family remain extremely positive and thank everyone for their support and concern," the statement said, concluding with a request that her privacy be respected.
The one-year survival rate for all stages of pancreatic cancer combined is 20 percent and drops to 5 percent within five years, according to the American Cancer Society.
