Forced Abortion, One Child Policy: China's War Against its Own People to Continue

I was in China when the one-child policy began 30 years ago.

Hundreds of millions of women have been forcibly aborted and sterilized.  Homes have been razed, livestock confiscated, and exorbitant fines levied. In all, 400 million people are missing from the Chinese population as a result of the one-child policy. Like previous Chinese Communist Party-orchestrated disasters such as the Great Leap Forward, or the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, this policy, too, has been a disaster for the Chinese people. I should know. I was in China when the one-child policy began 30 years ago.

FRONT ROYAL, VA (Population Research Institute) - I was surprised when Beijing decided to celebrate (!) the thirtieth anniversary of the One-Child Policy this week.  I thought, quite frankly, that the declaration of a national day of mourning would have been more appropriate.

But I was even more taken aback when the head of China's National Population and Family Planning Commission, a woman named Li Bin, announced that China would continue to enforce this same Draconian policy for "decades" to come.  (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2010-09/27/content_11350778.htm)

Decades?  This is, after all, a policy that has led to a slaughter of the innocents of Biblical proportions.

What I saw then, living in an agricultural commune in rural Guangdong, rivals anything that happened in Nazi Germany.  One day in 1980 several hundred young mothers, all pregnant with second or higher-order children, were ordered to attend population control meetings.  There they were told that they would all have to abort their pregnancies.  Those who refused were arrested for the "crime" of being pregnant and locked up until they, too, buckled under the pressure and submitted to an abortion.

At that point they were taken to the local medical clinic and given a lethal injection into their uterus.  If their bodies did not expel their dead or dying babies within two days, they were subjected to a cesarean section abortion.  Most horrific of all, babies born alive were killed by means of an injection of formaldehyde into the "soft spot" on the crown of their heads.  Those few women who managed to escape arrest and had their babies in secret were assessed heavy fines.

Everything that I witnessed then, from the forced abortions of women in the third-trimester of pregnancy to government-sanctioned infanticide, is still happening now.  Those women who manage to avoid the dragnet by going into hiding are now subjected to even heavier fines, which currently run three to five times the family's annual income.  Those who can't pay this huge amount have had their homes destroyed and their possessions and livestock confiscated.

Moreover, such a child remains a "black child," that is a term they use to refer to one who does not exist in the eyes of the state. Such children are nonpersons, turned away from the government clinic if they fall ill, barred from attending a government school of any kind, and not considered for any kind of government employment later in life. They are not allowed marry or start families of their own, since the government has decreed that "black children" will not be allowed to reproduce.  One generation of illegals is enough.

The Chinese government, supported by foreign population control zealots, believe that its program should be held up as a population control role model for the rest of the world.  In reality, it should be roundly condemned for its widespread and systematic violations of human rights, especially the rights of women.

But even those who shy away from defending China's brutal repression of its population sometimes argue in favor of the one-child policy on other grounds.  China is often held up-by the UN Population Fund, for example-as a positive example of a county that has been able to slow population growth rates dramatically, and which has achieved prosperity as a result.  But to praise the country that has become the ugly poster child of forced abortion and coerced sterilization for the economic growth that these inhuman policies have supposedly generated is not only inconsistent, but also wrong.

China is clearly worse off economically as a result of eliminating from its population 400 million of the most productive and enterprising people the world has ever known.  China's astonishing economic performance-its annual GDP growth over the past three decades is close to 10%--is not only a tribute to the tremendous work ethic of the Chinese people, but also has led to labor shortages in China's coastal provinces.  Every baby born in China today is a net economic asset.  How much more would China have been able to achieve with an ...

Christopher, you are quite wrong, unfortunately, in regards to sex-selective abortions in China. As anyone who has lived there will be able to tell you- though a little research on your part will yield the same results- there are countless numbers of so-called "black market" medical practitioners in China who make their money illegally allowing Chinese families to determine the sex of their child. As a result, boys now outnumber girls by at least 26 million.

Here's a recent report to this effect. I suggest you read it as a first step towards comprehending the atrocities committed against girls in China:

Some people above referred to the President giving the highest moral authority to China about abortion. What a joke that's the same as the pope saying it. China owes America. Bonds and all our manufacturing have been seen there for slave labor. The previous President and Reagan, Clinton, Bush H have given them free reign of the trade market. This is not a christian country if it ever was. People are starving in America because of free trade with Communist China. They are over populated now and will never stop abortion or the policy of one child. It's just like Americans telling them to have more children. Who's going to support them when 20% percent don't have a job. The abortion issue is out of touch and not even reasonable in this greedy capitalist society. The right would like to kill the elderly, sick and widows, just what the scriptures said the rich should help.

    Christopher,

Tens of Thousands Adopbted vs Millions Aborted doesn't seem like a fair trade when it comes to lives.

Also I found the article factual, with some personal experiences not hateful.

The above comment on the population of China being soooo large ,,its .well ,kinda ok what they do..well first of all this is a myth..who counted all of these people anyway and why would one want to believe such lies from a ruthless gang of barbarians.China became communist because Russia needed a panama canal of its own. After that debacle in the Russo_Jap war they sent agents to America and Japan to get Japan out of Manchuria and Korea...and they succeeded, with the likes of traitors like Hiss,Sorge,Lattimor,Marshall etc etc. I endorse the site of the Cardinal Kung Foundation, they work with the Catholic Christian underground churchs over there and have all the facts.

I wonder how many of the 400 milion missing chinese would have died in the war for natural resources and living space with Russia over Siberia ,when Russia had to resort to it's atomic weapons to deal with China's overwhelming manpower advantage.

I have been to China three times, and let me tell you I have not encountered a people who loves children more than they do. A walk on the street with a child attracts a crowd of older women who offer advice on how to dress the child, hold the child, etc. Many will reach out to pick up the child. It can be overwhelming, but you know its with the best intentions. I cannot begin to imagine the agony borne by so many mothers and fathers and grandparents in that land where so many babies have been torn from their families. My heart breaks for them. God save the world from such darkness.

Interesting but you failed to mention that the Ultra Sound techinician is not permitted to look for or annouce the sex of the baby or the tens of thousands of babies that are adopted each year internationally as a result of the one child policy.

I agree that the one child policy is not appropriate and it should be abolished but this article to me seems like hate mail and the Catholic church has raised me better than that.

I really hope and pray that one day the Chinese will be strong enough to break the burden they are under and live like intelligent and free people.

If Russia could do it then China can do it.....

God have mercy is right. I've been saying the rosary on a special prolife rosary for these 40 days before the election so that all proabortion congressmen are kicked out and replaced by prolifers. America does not need what the poor Chinese have. Poor little babies. Greatly offended God, have mercy on us. Change all hearts to vote for life. Stop abortion and euthanasia. Voting is an action and we will be judged for actions as well as words. Voting is one way you"walk" prolife and you Catholic faith. You can't just talk the talk, you have to walk the walk.
