LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Often referred to as a "living fossil," the sea creature is actually a type of shark. According to the South East Trawl Fishing Association (SETFA) in Australia, this rare shark has a six-foot long, eel-like body with three fins on its back.
Its six pairs of fringed gill slits and 25 rows of 300 needle-shaped teeth make this fish appear millions of years old, resembling a fossil.
Take the time now to treat yourself, because there won't be any later.
"It's a freaky thing," Simon Boag, the chief executive officer at SETFA, to Australia's ABC Rural. "I don't think you would want to show it to little children before they went to bed."
The "living fossil" pounces on prey by bending its body like a snake and usually dwells at 2,296 feet below the surface, making its shallow appearance very rare.
"This guy was just unlucky," Boag stated to Australia's ABC Rural.
"I've been at sea for 30 years and I've never seen a shark that looks like that," David Guillot, the captain of the Western Alliance Vessel, to radio station 3AW Drive. "It was like a large eel, probably 1.5 meters (five feet), and the body was quite different to any shark I'd ever seen."
