Second Ukraine peace treaty unlikely to hold

While the leaders of France, Germany, Ukraine and Russia met over a marathon session to formulate and sign a ceasefire agreement intended to end the almost year long civil war in Ukraine, activity along the Russo-Ukrainian border has left many skeptical that this ceasefire will last any longer than the one agreed to in September of 2014.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A Ukrainian military spokesman, Andriy Lysenko, reported that around 50 tanks, 40 missile systems and 40 armored vehicles crossed into eastern Ukraine from Russia on Thursday, while the peace agreement was being discussed.

Lysenko continued, reporting that columns of unmarked, Russian-speaking soldiers, have advanced to Debaltseve, which has been the sight of intense fighting between Ukraine army units and the Russian backed rebels.

Debaltseve is a strategic rail and road transportation hub and is currently controlled by Ukraine soldiers, however, they are hemmed in by rebels on three sides, and their supply lines in and out of the city have been shelled constantly.

"The enemy continues to strengthen its forces in the most dangerous areas, especially in northeast Luhansk region and in the direction of Debaltseve," said the spokesman.

These forces have moved into eastern Ukraine "despite statements by Russian officials about the absence of Russian military equipment and forces on Ukrainian territory."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande seem pleased with the peace agreement, but have warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that should he breech the new agreement, more sanctions will follow.

February is a month for love and devotion.

Part of the peace agreement is that "foreign armed formations," regardless if they are backing the rebels or Ukrainian government, and their "military equipment" must leave the "territory of Ukraine" by February 15, and complete withdrawal two weeks later.

However, Putin still gets a victory from this agreement. Ukraine must give more authority to the east, and it will not have full control over the border with Russia until the end of 2015 at the earliest, and this means that it will be unable to join NATO, something that Putin has been adamant about.
