St. Hilarion

St. Hilarion

St. Hilarion

Feastday: October 21
291 - 371

Abbot and disciple of St. Anthony the Great, companion of St. Hesychius. He was born in Tabatha, Palestine, and was educated in Alexandria, Egypt. He stayed with St. Anthony in the desert there before becoming a hermit at Majuma, near Gaza, Israel. In 356, Hilarion returned to St. Anthony in the Egyptian desert and found that his fame had Spread there too. He fled to Sicily to escape notice, but Hesychius traced him there. The two went to Dalmatia, Croatia, and then to Cyprus. Hilarion performed so many miracles that crowds flocked to him when it was discovered he was in any region. He died on Cyprus, and St. Hesychius secretly took his remains back to Palestine. His cult is now confined to local calendars.

To answer Frank Speyerer, Israel has been there for centuries, long before the UN, the EU and the US. It was granted statehood by the UN on the date you mentioned. There are numerous countries ('states') that exist today or in the past, that are not recognized as a 'state' by the UN, meaning they carry no vote on UN issues.
Case in point is Palestine. You can read about Palestine in history, yet it is not even a recognized state by the UN. This is a part of why they're up in arms. They're not a UN state, however, they defy being denied existence as I'm sure we can all agree.
In summary, the UN is not the authority or the authenticator on when a country or established state came to be. Surely you have read about the existence of Israel in the Bible and know this to be true.

I agree with the lady who commented about the "half-naked lady" in the picture. With all the people addicted to porn these days and perhaps young devout Catholic boys reading these daily, I think that picture is completely inappropriate! Too bad there isn`t one of Hilarion doing miracles. It is very interesting that a saint who was a hermit went around(while fervently trying not to be noticed!)performing miracles, kind of rare in that time period, I think.

The state of Israel was established on May 14, 1948. How could Hilarion become a "hermit at Majuma, near Gaza, Israel" in the year 350? Let's get a little more realistic on these so called "saints".

There wasn't enough information on Him. If he lived as a hermit why was he sought after? His heritage might be helful. What significants did the picture have? Was there a story behind it?

Why the pic of a half naked lady with this saint? As a family we read "Saint of the Day". But I have teen boys so I think we will skip this one. This isn't "National Geographic" type of nakedness which they can handle.

From the photograph it seems St.Hilarion, is under a physical temptation. Temptation's which comes of the Spirit are the Dangerous one, falling once into it is lost forever, unlike physical temptations. The Bible says of " Jesus Christ was taken by the spirit to be tempted of the Devil. This temptation is spiritual.

to me it is impressive that christian saints were active in the middle east at such an early stage of the roman church's history. i was wondering what kind of miracles hilarion performed. how was hesychius involved?
